Medullary Sponge Kidney Awareness - Did You Know?

*Guest Post
Each pair of socks at iNFable is dedicated towards producing awareness towards a particular disease. Just like that, these socks are dedicated towards the Medullary Sponge Kidney disease.
According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, one in 5000 people in the United States is affected by this disease. In this disease, tiny fluid-filled sacs called cysts form in the inner portion of the kidney known as “medulla”. In a normal kidney, the urine flows freely through the tubules. In the kidney affected by this disease, the urine collects in these cysts, giving the kidney a sponge-like appearance, and hence the name.
Medullary Sponge Kidney disease is a birth defect. The cysts develop in the fetus, but the symptoms of the disease are not visible in the people until their teenage years or the 20s. The people having this disease are at increased risk of developing kidney stones and urinary tract infections. The cysts are visible in the person at birth, however, the scientists still do not know the exact reason why the cysts form in the first place.
The disease progresses slowly with no symptoms at the start. The initial symptoms show blood in urine and calcium-based kidney stones.
These abstract designed Medullary Sponge Kidney disease awareness socks can help the people suffering from this disease by creating awareness and contributing to the cause. The socks material consists of 80% cotton, 9% Spandez and 11% polyester. 10% of the profit from the sale of these socks goes to a non-profit organization working for the cause.
